The Jumbies By Tracey Baptiste

The Jumbies
By: Tracey Baptiste

Tracey Baptiste was at the 2019 Truman State University Children’s Literature Festival. I got to meet her and she was SUPER nice.

This book is about a girl named Corinne whose mom died a long time ago. One day Corinne went into the woods chasing an animal. Corinne can’t help but think about jumbies. Corinne isn’t afraid of these made up creatures who supposedly live in the woods — jumbies — in the adults’ stories. But shining yellow eyes watch her. They couldn’t belong to a jumbie like in the adults’ stories?

Not much later a beautiful woman shows up at the market to talk to the town witch. Then the beautiful woman, Severine, shows up at Corinne’s house to cook dinner for her father. Corinne is definitely suspicious. Later, Corinne finds out that Severine is really the jumbie that watched Corinne that night in the woods in disguise. And Severine is trying to take over the island for the jumbies and take Corinne’s father.

My favorite character is definitely Corinne. She is very brave and loves her father and friends with all her heart.

This book is for fourth-sixth grade.

I give this book 4 ½ out of 5 bookworms.   Bookworm

We just love the Literature Festival! Glad to hear that you like it, too! The Jumbies sounds a bit scary, but exciting. Thanks for reviewing it!
