Strays Like Us
By: Cecilia Galante
Strays Like Us is a super interesting book. I couldn’t put it down!
Strays Like Us is about a girl (Winifred or “Fred”) who lives with her mom and is in a tiny apartment. At her mom’s work the manager treats Fred’s mom horribly, and one day it seems like her mom has stolen pills! The mom goes to jail, and Fred is stuck with a foster parent. Margery, the foster parent, has a huge house and rides a motorcycle. Margery says to stay away from the person next door because he just might be the meanest person on earth. When Fred goes outside, though, she can’t help but notice the dog on a chain outside in the neighbor’s yard. When Fred asks Margery about that dog she says it lives outside. Margery also makes Fred promise she will not go near that dog. But how can she when that dog is suffering?
My favorite characters have to be Toby and Delia. Since you probably don’t know who those characters are I will tell you. Toby is the dog next door, and Delia is a friend Fred makes at her new school. I like Toby because I am just kind of drawn to him. Also, he is so sweet! I like Delia because she is forgiving. She also is persistent (when she wants to be.)
This is a third-fifth grade book.
I give this book 4 ½ out of 5 bookworms.
