Hi, Lexi and also E. I am impressed that you have read Hidden Figures, Lexi. Have you seen the movie? I have not read the book but I have seen the film. It’s interesting and gratifying to see these women get some credit for their participation in getting the US to the moon. I remember as a young girl watching the first ever human landing on the moon in July of 1969 on TV. I never would have guessed at that time that several African American women did so much toward that effort.
The last three non-fiction books I have read this year are Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich, Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, and When Breath Becomes Air.
Blitzed: Drugs in the Third Reich is about how some bad people used a lot of bad drugs to try to win what would become known as World War II. This war was a long time ago, even before I was born. The bad people lost the war. Hoorah!
Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers is about what happens to some human bodies after the people died. It’s really interesting in a sort of morbid way. Some are donated to medical schools so students can learn how to be doctors. Cool, huh?
I know. These are two weird books. But the third one, When Breath Becomes Air, while still about something sad, is very beautiful and moving. It’s the memoir of a cancer doctor as he gets sick with lung cancer and eventually dies from it. This doctor was an amazing man who gave much of himself to his patients and to the world and who died too soon.
Sorry for the heavy subjects, Lexi. I’ll try not to be such a downer next time.
